Is jellyfish?

Weird goop on the beach

There were handfuls of this rubbery goop all over Whalebone beach the other day. Any idea what it is? I wondered if it could be ambergris — a valuable substance used in the making of perfumes. Vancouver from Gabriola

That’s West Vancouver in front of the cruise ship. Vancouver’s the dark bit on the right side. I think the seagull has the right idea: hang out on Whalebone Beach and ignore the city altogether.

A Gabriola spiderweb

This morning I was in the woods near Whalebone Beach, and the whole forest was a sparkling miracle of spiderwebs. This web looks like a hammock for a small forest creature.
