Today at Whalebone

I’m going to focus on sand, sea, and gooseprints. I’m going to ignore the current crop of Whalebone beach-campers, forget about sailing waits, and count down the minutes until school starts on Tuesday morning. Pass the shiraz, dear.

The forest in a drop of sap

This is the Gabriola forest, reflected in a drop of sap. I suppose it’s the summertime equivalent of the forest in a raindrop, a photo I showed you in January. Do you happen to know why some conifers ooze sap? Are they injured trees? Are insects attacking them? Or are they just unable to contain [...]

Kyra of Gabriola

This is Kyra, one of our favourite Gabriola friends. She died a couple of days ago. We are heartbroken. Farewell, sweet Airedale. See also: Gabriola Airedale – that’s Kyra, of course. Update, October 2011: Kyra still stands out as one of the Best Dogs Ever, and we still miss her more than you could imagine.

Illegal camping and campfires on Gabriola

A bunch of people camped on Whalebone Beach last night. Must have been a party, judging from the mess they left behind on the beach: empty beer cans, broken glass, a cigarette package, used toilet paper… oh my. They’ve had a campfire, and scorched an India Pale Ale beer can in the flames. Considering the [...]

Return of the sea-side golfer

I think one of Gabriola’s sea-side golfers is at it again – one of the send the balls into the sea crowd. See? Golf balls in tidal pools again. (I’ve already mentioned Why I worry about golf balls on Gabriola beaches.)

Gabriola intertidal terror

That scream you heard this morning at Whalebone was me. I was wading in the sea with my dog, and, you know, paying attention to the dog. That’s when the mother of all massive Dungeness crabs scampered across my bare feet. There are no words, but there are screams. Am trying to remedy situation with [...]

Gabriola Airedale

This is our Airedale friend, shown here at Whalebone. Isn’t she grand? Her ears bounce when she walks, and she is altogether fine in every regard.

Camping on Whalebone Beach

This was the scene at Whalebone on Saturday: several tents, two dogs, one campfire, and a bunch of people. Happy campers, I suppose — apparently the first of the season at Whalebone. I’m at Whalebone quite a lot, and I must admit that my heart sinks when I see people camping on the beach. Every [...]

The ‘no fires’ sign and where it went

At the start of Gabriola’s Joyce Lockwood Park, there was a ‘no fires’ sign. And then there wasn’t: somebody had ripped it down and caused it to vanish. Who did it, and where’d that sign go? I can’t tell you who did it, but I can tell you where the sign wound up. Today I [...]

Gabriola kayakers

They paddled out to see Gabriola’s wildlife, in this crazy herring-spawning week of wildlife extravaganza. And did they see the wildlife? Well, yes, some of it. But the sea-lions had the last laugh, I think, playing behind the kayak, and putting on their best show half a second after the kayak had paddled past. See [...]

Strange events at Whalebone Beach

Investigative reporter Anon E. Mouse investigated the reports of mysterious knitted sweaters / tube socks at Whalebone Beach and reports (investigatively, of course) that the railings at Whalebone are indeed stylishly tricked out in knitted fashion accessories. Didn’t you know, leggings are the new spring look for railings! The knitting gnomes, guerrillas, or gorillas have [...]

View from Whalebone

Whalebone is in shadows in the late afternoon, but beautiful still. See those dots in the water? Most of them are seals — I counted sixteen of them, though they don’t all appear in this photo. They pop up, look around, pop down… and I can never seem to get a clear zoom shot of [...]

Attn: Gabriola builders and DIY types

The steps down to Whalebone Beach need somebody’s help. Something’s gone wrong at the bottom of the staircase, and the gap between the last stair and the sand is too great a gap. People who are young and fit will still be able to get onto the beach, but my elderly friend hasn’t a hope. [...]

Why I worry about golf balls on Gabriola beaches

One morning a few years ago I found over five dozen golf balls on a Gabriola beach. Some were lodged between rocks, some were half-buried in sand, some were tangled in seaweed. Lots were just perched on the sand. The tide had brought them in, but from where? I had visions of a flock of [...]

Exposed: Gabriola sea anemone

A few days ago I blogged about sea anemones, and showed you a photo I took of one at Berry Point. That anemone was left in peace, and looked the way sea anemones look when they’re left alone to do their own thing. The other day at Whalebone I got a completely different view of [...]
