Turkeys in the grass

I thought turkey poults were a spring thing, since it was May last time I noticed them. (Gabriola turkey update.) But now the turkeys who hang out by the RCMP station on South Road at Dirksen have lots of little additions toddling about in the grass. Very cute. Maybe one of these days I’ll manage [...]

The South Road plant stand

There’s something delightfully rural and old-fashioned about shopping at roadside honour stands. Take what you want, figure out how much you owe, and leave your money in the jar – how much simpler could it be? I like to buy plants at this stand on South Road. Have you been there? It’s between Silva Bay [...]

The Brickyard Beast

Well, this is insane. Stan and Nancy from The Gym at Twin Beaches have organized a running event called The Brickyard Beast. It’s a 10k road race that starts at Tait and Ferne, heads down to Brickyard, goes up Brickyard Hill, and then along South Road, Lochinvar, and North Road to Gabriola Elementary School. And [...]

Painting Gabriola’s hydro poles

This is the intersection of North Road and South Road, seen from the Gabriola Post Office. And, oh my, look what’s happened to the hydro pole! It’s become a giant yellow pencil. This is the first painted pole I’ve seen, but apparently there will be many more on the island. Kathy Ramsay’s article in The [...]

iRaccoon

If I tell you that I saw a raccoon up a tree, you’ll think that’s typical for Gabriola. If I tell you the raccoon seemed to be holding a cell phone and wearing earplugs, you’ll think I’m seeing things. Until you see it too, that is. This raccoon is on South Road, just bit the [...]

Best Gabriola sign?

If there’s a sign at the edge of a large bit of Gabriola property, it usually says no trespassing or some such. But this sign (on South Road) indicates a different attitude altogether. It says: NO HUNTING NO DOGS OFF LEASH NO VEHICLES KNOW THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY It doesn’t say no trespassing. I don’t [...]

Gabriola’s newest electric fence?

Say you’re driving along South Road from Lochinvar towards Silva Bay. You pass the Gabriola Golf and Country Club. Right after that, this fence appears on your left, and continues until it’s opposite Clyde Coats’ driveway. It’s a serious electric fence, but why? Is it intended to keep livestock in? If so, that’s puzzling, because [...]

Gabriola’s strangest fire hydrant

Suppose you’re driving from Silva Bay to Descanso Bay, along South Road. At — oh, is it a little past Coats? — you pass a (locked) fire hydrant on the right side of the road. Have you ever stopped to look at it? Well. I don’t usually, but a while ago I was walking along [...]
