Woke up this morning to find snow everywhere, and now there’s lots more coming down. Amazing. Next week is spring break, which usually brings swarms of visitors to Gabriola. Bet they won’t come if the weather is like this.

Dear Gabriola snowplough drivers, Do you miss us? We miss you. Why don’t you come clear our neighbourhood streets, then stop in for a bowl of hot soup? Love, The snowed-in people who are about to hike to the village for groceries.

What better than a blanket of snow to add magic to a Gabriola morning? And what better than snow — with more on the way, apparently — to make the washing machine repair guy cancel his visit to Gabriola today? The septic system repair guy phoned last night to cancel, too, so our fixit day [...]

At least, nobody I know wants any more snow. And it’s snowing furiously right now, covering our deck with white. *sigh*

The snow is melting, but you can still turn a corner and walk into the light: a snow-filled meadow. If I ever win a bajillion dollars, I’ll use it to buy all the land around this meadow, and turn it into a nature reserve.

…much less weeks of snow! I don’t suppose you were out in the blizzard last night, were you? We were. We were driving back from the south end of the island, fascinated and horrified at how quickly the snow was coming down. We made it through the Tunnel ok, then got up the hill past [...]

If you were celebrating at the Surf or the Skol last night, and if –oh, just suppose– you have a bit of a headache this morning, you’d probably like to blame it on somebody else. How about the Babylonians and the Romans? Canada.com reports that New Year’s traditions hail from the depths of antiquity. If [...]

I’d walked there every day for months, but had no idea that a fantastic network of trails began just a few feet from my regular route. What clued me in was the snow, followed by easy-to-follow footprints and pawprints all heading off into the forest. Gabriola has lots of snow left, but no new snow, [...]

I love the signs people post on Gabriola’s bulletin boards. Items for sale, rants, offers of help, stern warnings — I read them all. Lately there have been signs like this one popping up all over the island. "Help me get out of this snow!" is the cry.

Merry Christmas, Gabriola! I didn’t make it to your house with a crew of carollers this year, so let me send these guys instead, courtesy of Youtube. Imagine them standing in the snow outside, singing for you as you sip your eggnog.

Oh rats. The Gabriola Holiday Spirit Feast (community Christmas dinner at Camp Miriam) has been cancelled due to frozen pipes and because it looks like we’ll get more snow. The Coffeehouse Boxing Day Kitchen Party is cancelled, too – nobody will be able to park at the Agi Hall in all this snow. (Information source: [...]

Pardon my obsession with the snow these days — it’s just that I haven’t a hope of going anywhere until I shovel the driveway, and (after much effort!) I am only one-seventh of the way done. So this is an interesting product. It’s called the wovel, and is supposed to make it easier and faster [...]

"So how much snow did you get on Gabriola, anyway?" This is what my city friends are asking. And here — this is how much snow we have in our back yard. I’d guess that lots of places on Gabriola have about 15 inches of snow, but at our house we’re extra lucky. In other [...]

In the midst of a Gabriola blizzard, these ten things make me happy: The neighbour who sometimes clears everybody’s driveways. (What should I get him for Christmas?) Drivers who are willing to pick up hitchhikers. Businesses that welcome the occasional dog inside, thus making it possible for a dog owner to hike to the village [...]

Have you noticed that brochures and pamphlets that promote Gabriola –usually published by tourism-based businesses or realtors– never seem to include photos like this? (Click on image thumbnail for larger version.) I suppose we wouldn’t want to admit that we’ve had to shovel snow every day for the last week. Ah well. It’s beautiful, and [...]
