Winter vs spring

We had snow this morning on Gabriola – great big flakes, but they didn’t amount to much. And then, while pondering the cold, I came across this salmonberry blossom on North Road. When do you ever see salmonberry blossoms in March?

A Gabriola snow day

There’s a trail in there, somewhere. See it? It’s right down the middle, between the trees. The salal has bent under the weight of snow, so getting through takes a bit of effort. We woke to four or five inches of snow on Gabriola today, and what a pretty scene that makes. But of course [...]

For cyclists who venture forth in the snow

We’ve got some dedicated cyclists on Gabriola. Are you one of them? If you’re determined to ride on snowy roads and trails, here’s something you might like to try: zap straps (also known as zip ties) on your tires for added traction. The Dutch Bike Company of Seattle explains all in their Seattle Snowpocalypse blog [...]

Snow on Gabriola!

Last night Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for our area. No snow. This morning that forecast page says snowfall warning ended. And now? Snow! It’s snowing heavily here, and starting to stick. I wonder if this will affect voter turnout tomorrow.

Gabriola power outage

Some of Gabriola spent 12 hours without power today, starting about 3 am this morning. Anybody happen to know what caused this outage? BC Hydro says just due to snowstorm. But what took the line down, and where? Curious folk would like to know.

Snow in the Gabriola woods

Do you see the trail there, Gabriola? I don’t either, though we’re looking straight at it. But this is good, right? You wanted extra exercise and extra adventure. Tramping through snow piled on top of salal is just the ticket, and is far more fun than some silly routine at the gym. Extra points if [...]

Cardhu of Gabriola

We woke to fresh snow today on Gabriola, and I bet I know who’s happiest about that: the island’s dogs! This is Cardhu, one of the most eager-to-love-you dogs I know. One day maybe I’ll get a better photo of him. It’s hard because he seems to never be still.

Bailey the Unknown Reindeer

If Gabriola’s endless rainstorms were to become snowstorms, we’d be having this kind of fun with the dog. And you’d be mightily amused watching. The sled-stealing dog is pretty funny, too.

On freezing to death

We’ve had more cold than we expected on Gabriola lately. It’s a shock to us, especially since our dahlias were blooming two weeks ago. We see callow young ‘uns taking short-cuts through the Gabriola forest wearing things that can’t possibly be warm enough. I don’t know these kids, but I want to wrap them in [...]

Deer tracks in Gabriola snow

On walks, the dog thinks I am dense: how can this human possibly miss all the great smells? How can this human walk right by the place where deer romped, and ignore the route deer took into the Gabriola woods? How stupid is that? And then snow comes, and I can see where the deer [...]

Snow-covered

Ah, Village Food Market. There you in in the dying light of late afternoon, covered in snow. The white becomes you. I’d suggest that you wear white more often, but then all of Gabriola would have to wear white more often, and that wouldn’t do.

A snowy night, a happy wreath

Ohmygoodness, all that snow! Well. I’m sitting here sipping some single malt — as one does on snow days — and feeling happy about my wreath, shown here. This wreath is cool because: looks pretty spiffy, doesn’t it? it was made on Gabriola, out of Gabriola greenery a friend made it she gave it to [...]

Ready for snow, Gabriola?

Remember last winter? All that snow was beautiful, but my there was a lot of it. (If your memory is fading, peek at the blog posts about snow on Gabriola last year.) I made lots of snow-based resolutions then, all along the lines of I Will Be Better Prepared Next Year. With that in mind, [...]

What about the garbage?

If your garbage and recycling didn’t get picked up today because of the snow, you might be interested in the RDN’s page about Snow and Adverse Weather Service Cancellations, which says: If you live on a bi-weekly collection route and your regular collection day is missed due to weather or road conditions, every effort will [...]
