The cat is not lost
This sign amuses me no end. What has happened to the poor un-lost cat, and how many times?

Hey, do you remember the fuss over roadside signs on Gabriola a while back? It seems to me that the Islands Trust bylaw guy was going to get involved, and that businesses with roadside signs around the island would be ordered to remove those signs or face fines. Predictable amounts of fuss and discussion ensued. [...]

There are an awful lot of no trespassing and keep out signs on Gabriola these days. But then there are a few signs like this one: far less severe, and it even says please. I’d like to meet the owner of this property.

At this time of year, pedestrians are difficult to see in the evening. I’m not suggesting that we add any signs about this, but if we were to do so, I’d opt for the first sign shown in the Haiku Traffic Signs article: She walks in beauty Like the night. Maybe that’s why Drivers can’t [...]

If you’ve got a don’t do that! sign on Gabriola, chances are that somebody’s going to rip that sign down and get rid of it for you. This sign has been discarded at the side of North Road in the Tunnel. Where did it come from?

Here’s a fine addition to the island’s collection of home-made signs. Have you seen it? It’s on North Road. This one makes me smile. (See also: Gabriola ‘slow’ signs post from April, 2011.)

This sign appeared a while ago on North Road. You didn’t steal any tables, did you?

A fair number of people get married on Gabriola in the summertime – we seem to be a bit of a wedding destination for people who don’t live on the island, as well as those who have some sort of Gabriola connection. One of the things wedding organizers often do these days is to post [...]

I am not an artist, and I don’t have art for sale at Gabriola Artworks. I do not teach Principles of Design or any similar thing at a college or other institution. But I do look at the campaign signs that are now all over the place on Gabriola Island. And I think that if [...]

I heard that there’d be a new speed limit soon for Gabriola Island, but I didn’t realize it was already in effect. (Did you? Am I the only one who only noticed this sign today?) This sign is on ferry hill, where it’s supposed to be obvious to those just driving off the Quinsam. The [...]

Before moving to Gabriola, we considered other islands. (Did you?) One of the other islands on our initial list was Saltspring, which we decided was too busy for us. Also, while driving around that island, we were alarmed by the number of signs that said SLOW KIDS. Did that indicate something dangerous in the drinking [...]

If there’s a sign at the edge of a large bit of Gabriola property, it usually says no trespassing or some such. But this sign (on South Road) indicates a different attitude altogether. It says: NO HUNTING NO DOGS OFF LEASH NO VEHICLES KNOW THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY It doesn’t say no trespassing. I don’t [...]

How’s this for a splendid sign? It’s at the Poetry Yurt building site at the Gabriola Commons.

Signs on Gabriola continue to proliferate. Sometimes at corners you can’t see the traffic you need to see because some sandwich board is blocking your view, and you have to ease out and crane your neck to make sure it’s safe to go. Then there are signs advertising Gabriola businesses, island events, for sale by [...]

Spotted this one the other day while in the Gabriola ferry line-up on Taylor Bay Road.

Somebody on Gabriola has gone to the work of making and posting these report poachers signs. How much of a problem is poaching on the island? Have you seen any evidence of poaching on Gabriola?

This sign on the Quinsam reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, in which Alice finds objects bearing commands: a bottle that says drink me! and a cake that says eat me! Alice would be right at home on the Quinsam. I’m sure she would Break Glass For Key, as the sign commands. Though I do [...]

Last fall I blogged about an odd corner on Gabriola, and included a photo gallery of the sights there. Remember? It’s the place where a plane seems to have crashed into an old red truck, which is occupied by clothed skeletons, and… well. Go look at that blog post and you’ll see why it sticks [...]
