Brushing the roadside
Ah, so this is what disturbs the soil along the side of Gabriola roads. I’d wondered. (Seen on North Road.)

Well, when did this appear? Have you seen it? It’s rather high up in a tree – somebody’s come along with a big ladder to put this one up, I think. Next time you’re driving from Silva Bay towards the Village, see if you can spot this mask. It’s on the right side of North [...]

Have you seen the Christmas decorations in the Tunnel? They went up yesterday afternoon, which I know because I happened to see people putting them up; it felt a bit like catching Santa. I should have stopped and asked those decorators if they’ve been putting up Christmas decorations in the Elder Cedar Nature Reserve over [...]

Did you buy three ready-to-cook turkeys today on Gabriola, and somehow lose them on the way home? I found them in the middle of North Road, still in their plastic bags. Seemed stupid to leave them there, so I’ve moved them to the side of the road in hopes that you’ll see this and know [...]

If you’ve got a don’t do that! sign on Gabriola, chances are that somebody’s going to rip that sign down and get rid of it for you. This sign has been discarded at the side of North Road in the Tunnel. Where did it come from?

I’d thought that Gabriola’s river otters hang out near the sea, but maybe I’m wrong about that. Today I saw a river otter cross North Road near Barrett. Is that typical? Where is the furthest-from-sea location that you’ve seen river otters on Gabriola? (Photo by Dmitry Azovtsev. Found here on the Wikimedia Commons site. This [...]
If you’ve been waiting to have an RCMP officer check your papers, this is your lucky day. (Previous discussion on this topic is in this blog post: Another traffic stop day for Gabriola.)

Here’s a fine addition to the island’s collection of home-made signs. Have you seen it? It’s on North Road. This one makes me smile. (See also: Gabriola ‘slow’ signs post from April, 2011.)

Look what’s appeared in the tunnel on North Road. Have you seen him? As you’re driving from Folklife towards Silva Bay, this guy is on your left, just a bit before Elgie Road. Anyway. Did you put him there?

A few years ago at the Gabriola Farmers Market, a local gardener/plant vendor lady was selling broom seedlings. I know, I know. Isn’t broom Gabriola’s insanely invasive plant problem? But these were pink broom, she explained. Very pretty, and totally non invasive. Fast forward to now. Do you ever walk past the Islands Trust office [...]
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ve read about Gabriola’s feral tukeys. (See fowl invasion, Gabriola turkey invasion, Gabriola turkeys in the news, etc.) At the moment, the island’s turkeys are even more than usually interesting. Some of them are lurking near the bottom of the s-curve on North Road at Horseshoe, [...]

Huge numbers of things have been dumped in the Gabriola woods over the years. Other than the grow-op trash, I’d thought we were mostly past that. Apparently not. Somebody’s taken rather a lot of broken glass and left it smashed at the side of the road, where it’s spilling into the forest. Rats.

Driving up ferry hill from Descanso Bay, this is what the air was like. That’s not low-lying cloud, it’s smoke. It’s not from somebody’s fire, it’s from one smoking vehicle ahead of me. And this after I’d hung back to get (somewhat) cleaner air!

There are plans to build a new fire hall on Gabriola to replace Fire Hall #1 on North Road. That’s because the current hall isn’t earthquake-proof, and is inadequate in numerous other ways, too. To explain the proposal, there was an open house at the fire hall on Saturday. Did you go? We did. They [...]

Today I happened across this post at the side of the road in the Gabriola tunnel. It’s a survey marker thing, right? It had fallen over, or been pushed. The letters upon the post say IPR P.C. Why those letters? What do they stand for? What are these posts about? (For those interested in brass [...]
