On Saturday night some scoundrel broke into a few Gabriola businesses: Harvest Thyme, G&S Meats, Raspberry’s, and Arbutus. Broken glass, theft, and serious frustration for business owners is about what it amounted to.

The good news? The thief left a blood sample on broken glass, and some fingerprints, too. Maybe that will help — I imagine that it makes the police forensics people happy.

You’ll read all about this a week or so from now in Gabriola newspapers. The RCMP will probably point the finger at person or persons unknown, who committed this crime between the hours of 0-something o’clock and 0-something-later o’clock.

Still, when Robyn at Harvest Thyme suggested I try a yam quesadilla, I thought she was off her rocker. Whoever heard of yam in a quesadilla, after all? Clearly an insane idea, but I said yes anyway.

That yam quesadilla was awesome.

I was disappointed the next day to find that yam quesadillas weren’t on the menu after all; they had only been a test item.

I’ve been pestering Robyn ever since, and finally she’s added yam quesadillas to the menu. You’ve got to go try them, kids. Yummy, yummy, yummy. Tell the Harvest Thyme people that you read about them on some blog.

Many Gabriola cheese-lovers will soon be cheese-makers, thanks to a workshop put on tonight at Harvest Thyme. Tammy and Robin showed the group how to make mozzarella and paneer — both easy cheeses for a beginner.

If you weren’t able to attend this workshop, maybe I’ll see you at the one Harvest Thyme plans for next month, aimed at those of us who didn’t register early enough this time around.

Meanwhile, here’s a recipe for a delicious cheese that is easier to make than mozzarella or paneer:

(Ingredient list for this cheese is here.)

(I’m still hoping that somebody will get inspired and start a cheese-making business on Gabriola — it’s just what this island needs! Maybe those people at Slow Rise Bakery (They’ve got a blog, too) would like to make cheeses to go with their breads?)
