Poetry Yurt at the Gabriola Commons

Having heard about the Poetry Yurt at the Gabriola Commons, I stopped in to see what the site looks like so far. Like this! I guess they’re building a proper platform for the thing first. Will I be able to use the yurt if my art consists of drinking beer and eating mince pies?

Poetry Gabriola announces that they’re building a poetry yurt at the Gabriola Commons. The Poetry Yurt is intended to be a year-round, multi-use venue for professional artists to research, develop, create, study, rehearse and workshop new works, and to gain depth and insight into current existing artistic practice. Labyrinth at the Gabriola Commons

Did you know that the Gabriola Commons has a labyrinth? Here it is. I think I prefer Gabriola’s spiral triskele, but the labyrinth is pretty impressive, too.

Gabriola Commons – new field?

This photo is taken from inside the veggie garden at the Gabriola Commons. (The community garden closest to the house.) What’s that just on the other side of the fence? Is it a new field? Is it for wheat? Gabriola Commons gardeners, do tell.

Gabriola Commons sun

Here’s some cheer for you from the Gabriola Commons, where this marker adorns a garden. I don’t garden at the Commons, but oh MY I love that place.

Gabriola Commons – new garden?

This seems to be new, yes? Looks like the Gabriola Commons is creating yet another space for a community garden. I’m a little tempted to apply for a plot. But then, I can garden at home, so maybe I should leave those Gabriola Commons spaces for people who don’t have the home-gardening option. I’d just [...]

What’s this plant at the Gabriola Commons?

This plant grows at the Gabriola Commons, in the area by the boardwalk. If it were summer, I’d see it in bloom and it would be way easier to identify. What colour is this plant when it’s blooming? If it’s pink, then maybe it’s Spiraea douglasii. Thoughts?

Gabriola Commons article

There’s an article about the Gabriola Commons in the Nanaimo Daily News today: Shared-property plans attracting more attention. Gabriola Island residents are turning a former goat farm into a community-owned centre, providing artists with a performance venue, hungry people with meals and seniors with hope that they might not have to move away from their [...]

On donating to the Gabriola Commons

Some months ago a volunteer from the Gabriola Commons phoned me. Would I consider signing up to support the Commons? Would I give them a cheque to authorize bank account deductions each month? Well, no, I wouldn’t. I give to charities, but I don’t write cheques anymore, and that monthly deduction thing creeps me out. [...]
