They fill with water in the winter, providing good puddle-dodging times for hikers and mountain bikers.

Insect larvae, I guess. The result? We thought it beautiful, and were there for a long time watching the light dance on the water. Here’s one of the photos:

Well, there are some – at intervals along The Tunnel. Until now they’ve been ordinary spray-painted things, the sort of thing a hurried graffiti-painter would leave behind. In the last while, though, they’ve been improved and upgraded. Look: stencilled arrows, now in brighter orange. Wowza. Surely this is more in keeping with Gabriola’s Isle of the Arts branding.

For ages I thought the arrows were some weird surveying mark, or that they were telling me go into the woods, here, this way! But now I figure they’re probably pointing upwards at the no trespassing signs above. Which reminds me: I must go see if the delightfully modified no trespassing sign is still there. Is it?

Anyway, apparently the lemonade stand there is now open for the season; I’m guessing they’ll be open tomorrow. According to this sign, they sell coffee, produce, plants, and birdhouses.

Usually when I find gloves and stuff in the woods, they’re on a trail, which is sensible enough. But this glove was in the middle of nowhere, not on a trail at all. I thought I was the only one crashing through the middle of the bush in this part of the woods, but apparently not.

Dear glove-owner: I admire your bush-crashiness. I took your glove out to the nearest trail and hung it on an alder tree.

UPDATE: Well, that took all of four hours. The glove’s owner saw this photo and sent me a note.
