Damncoolpictures.com has found a wonderful thing: photos of dogs underwater. The photographer was able to capture the dogs swimming underwater while playing fetch. The composition of each image is perfect, and each photo is lit so that the camera captures every detail of the dog as he or she plunges into the pool. The dogs’ [...]

This is Dormilon, and he’s lost on Gabriola. He went missing on Saturday, January 28th. His house is near the 707, so perhaps he’s in that area. Somebody saw a black dog wandering around early Monday morning on Bertha; Dormilon’s owners are hoping that he was the dog that person saw. And maybe that means [...]

When Bilbo asked Gollum that question, Gollum had to guess, much to his distress. But dogs never have to guess. They know as soon as they meet me that I have tasty dog treats in my pocket. Their question is what do I have to do to get those treats? This boy is so desperate [...]

Well, I’m not looking for it, you understand, but some biologists are. And now there’s a dog trained to sniff out whale poop. My dog would love a job like that.

Somewhere on Gabriola there’s a dog who travels everywhere on the back of this motorcycle. I see this bike parked at hiking spots all over the island, and often for long periods of time. The dog who travels on the back of the bike is clearly getting some very fine walks!

If you’re a dog owner, you’ve probably had a few misadventures over the last few years. That time when your dog had a set-to with a raccoon, say. Or maybe you’ve come closer to the dogs in elk story than you’d like to admit. Some of the most stunning gotcha moments are when you begin [...]

A fair number of people get married on Gabriola in the summertime – we seem to be a bit of a wedding destination for people who don’t live on the island, as well as those who have some sort of Gabriola connection. One of the things wedding organizers often do these days is to post [...]

If you were a schnauzer, I bet you’d love riding around Gabriola in a sidecar attached to a snazzy red scooter. This schnauzer seems quite content with the arrangement.

I hope beavers on Gabriola aren’t as frustrated as the beavers in Anchorage. From the Anchorage Daily News: Beavers get tough defending their turf.

There are dozens and dozens of dogs on Gabriola who ride around in the back of pick-up trucks. You’ve seen them, I know. You’ve been behind those trucks on South Road, or approaching the parking area at Drumbeg or Twin Beaches. You’ve seen dogs in the back of trucks at Folklife, in the ferry line-up, [...]

From the dog’s perspective, one of the best things about living on Gabriola is the deer – or rather, the venison dinners. A local hunter gave us an awful lot of deer bones last fall. We froze them, and Dog gnaws on deer bones rather frequently. So the good part is that there are deer [...]

We’ve many fine dogs on Gabriola, but there are a few who are particular heart-stealers. This Schnauzer (well, I’m pretty sure it’s a Schnauzer) is one. The human is reading a book whilst parked in the Waiting for the Ferry lot at Descanso Bay. The dog sometimes perks up to show ears of surpassing beauty, [...]

I talk to other Gabriola dog owners, so I know there are an awful lot of dogs on Gabriola who eat raw meat for dinner. If you’re the kind of dog owner who feeds a raw meat diet to your best friend, you probably take your meat bargains and freebies where you find them. You [...]

We woke to fresh snow today on Gabriola, and I bet I know who’s happiest about that: the island’s dogs! This is Cardhu, one of the most eager-to-love-you dogs I know. One day maybe I’ll get a better photo of him. It’s hard because he seems to never be still.

If Gabriola’s endless rainstorms were to become snowstorms, we’d be having this kind of fun with the dog. And you’d be mightily amused watching. The sled-stealing dog is pretty funny, too.
