A warning about Whalebone

Uh-oh! What’s that, there on the beach, Gabriola? It has several names, like if you mess with that I will give you a bath, dammit!, and putrid, vile, smelly thing. To be more precise, one might say stinky, dead animal or rotting carcass. If you were planning to go to Whalebone with your dog anytime [...]

Kyra of Gabriola

This is Kyra, one of our favourite Gabriola friends. She died a couple of days ago. We are heartbroken. Farewell, sweet Airedale.

Gabriola’s cutest feet?

If you had hoped to have the cutest and furriest feet on Gabriola, I’m afraid you’ll have to give up on that fantasy. Your feet don’t look as if Dr Seuss drew them into existence, do they? And your toe-fur doesn’t curl into delightful swirls when it’s wet, does it?

Intrepid dog

There are several Jack Russell Terriers on Gabriola. I love to watch them swim into the sea, where they brave waves of any height to fetch sticks. Their tails are usually up and wagging on the way back to shore.

Gabriola mouse

One of the things about having a dog is that you always know Where the Dead Things Are. On Gabriola, they’re everywhere. Todays’ dead thing is this little mouse, left in our yard by some neighbour’s cat. Probably the same annoying cat who leaves calling cards in the flower bed.

Sam of Gabriola

This is Sam, who rides around on the back of a bicycle. I found him outside Village Foods this evening, as his human went off to do some grocery shopping. I’ve seen Sam all over Gabriola. He sure gets around!

Buddy of Gabriola

If you live on Gabriola, you’ve seen Buddy. He’s the dog who runs beside his human’s bike as they travel all over the island. Everywhere I go, I see this dog! He must be one of the fittest dogs on Gabriola, and maybe one of the happiest, too: he gets exercise, company, fresh air, and [...]

The waiting dog

Perhaps you’ve noticed that dogs left in cars are often barking dogs — particularly here on Gabriola, and particularly in the parking lot at Folklife. Some days you can come out of Village Foods and hear four different sets of dogs barking. It’s often the tiny ones who make the most noise. There are quiet [...]

Viszla and Airedale at Whalebone

(The Viszla is on the left, the Airedale is on the right.) Viszla to human: Throw the ball, throw the ball, throw the ball, throw the ball… Airedale to Viszla: Who are you?
