Fire on the Queen of New Westminster
Some ferry passengers had added excitement this morning according to this press release from from BC Ferries:
VICTORIA – A fire was detected in the bow thruster compartment of the Queen of New Westminster just after the vessel departed Tsawwassen at 10:15 am bound for Duke Point this morning. The fire has been suppressed. No injuries have been reported.
The hi-fog fire suppression system was activated in the bow thruster compartment and the deluge system was activated on the main car deck.
The vessel returned to dock at Tsawwassen and passengers were evacuated via the overhead walkway. In addition to BC Ferries’ fire party, the Delta Fire Department attended the vessel.
The Queen of New Westminster has been pulled from service for the remainder of the day. The following sailings are cancelled between Duke Point and Tsawwassen today, October 23:

…the deluge system was activated on the main car deck.
That would be exciting for anyone napping in their car.

skadhu – wouldn’t it just? Nothing like the fun of a deluge system! (Although I do pity any dogs who were on the car deck.)

I’m picturing the possible effects if this had happened before the onset of the rainy season while people were still driving convertibles with the tops down. Wouldn’t that be an unpleasant surprise! ;)

We’ve had that happen to us on the Quinsam. All dressed up for “date lunch” when all of a sudden we were getting wet on a summer day when there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Turned out one of the ferry workers decided to clean the bridge with a hose without checking that maybe there was a ragtop, top down below him. Yes, it was very exciting, especially for him! ;-)
