Puzzling
This bone puzzles me, because the ends look as if they’ve been cut, not broken. And yet this is in the middle of the Gabriola woods, so how’d that happen?

Are you positive it’s an animal bone? Considering the fact you think the bone has been cut, & the fact there’s been more than a few human feet found floating in BC waters the last couple years, I’d be reporting the bone to the police if you have any suspicion it might be human.

Jay – I have no idea what kind of bone it is, though it looks a bit like the deer and elk rib bones my dog eats. I have no reason to suspect that it might be human.

It’s entirely possible that a scavenging raven or eagle carried off the remains of a human dinner. That would explain the cut ends.

Raccoons and other animals will carry bones off, if they get into a compost area or a green bin ( or folks who give their dogs bones in the yard) it might end up in other parts of the island.

skadhu and deb –
If this bone had shown up in my neighbour’s yard, I’d have concluded that a raven stole the bone from my dog and deposited it next door. We’ve seen this happen. Usually dinner-thieves eat their spoils nearby. (Within sight of our dog, who is furious about this.)
But in the middle of the woods, far from houses? That’s the part that gets me.
