On sweat and advertising
If you wander over to Folklife and into Island Pharmacy, how many under-arm antiperspirant/deodorant products will you find there? Oh, about 80. Yes, eighty. That seems a rather ridiculous number, especially considering that this sort of stuff didn’t even exist a few generations ago.
If you’re interested in advertising history, you might want to read Smithsonian Magazine’s article on how advertisers convinced people to buy antiperspirants in the first place.

The quote by Alex Tilley in his promotion for the Tilley hats:
“If you don’t perspire, you will expire.”

Westcoast995 – ha, I’d forgotten that. I do remember that the washing directions on Tilley hats used to say but they’ve changed that to something more ordinary now. I guess people were destroying their hats with zealous washing.
