Where do you get your veggies?
Perhaps your veggies come from Village Foods, or Spud, or Good Earth. Maybe they come from an honour stand in your neighbourhood, like the one Sweet Rock Farm has. Perhaps you grow your own. . . but even if you do, can you resist growing some veggies in the middle of your dining room table?
I didn’t think so.

I am wild over anything produced by Good Earth ! B&R are gardeners extraordinaire!! I love Spud also.. Mostly though, in late fall or winter, I also travel over to Nanaimo on Wed. afternoons.. In season.. To the large farmers’ market @ Beban Park. That market is fantastic! All the goods produced locally or nearby.. are so fine & tasty. I have always treasured farmer’s markets.. Even in Vancouver, I shopped at the big one near Trout Lake in East Van. Farmer’s Market season.. Looking forward to that!

We grow most of our own. I’m sure that the staff at Village Foods think we eat an unhealthy diet, as our purchases always include very few veggies! But that’s because I usually can’t find much in the store that I don’t already have, either in my garden, greenhouse, freezer or pantry. We get fresh green almost year-round (in the greenhouse when the garden’s not feasible), and I grow sprouts in the darkest days of winter when the greenhouse crops are at a standstill – though I use a mason jar rather than the table!

Arlene – I’d forgotten about that market! Perhaps I’ll move my next set of Nanaimo errands to a Wednesday so that I can check it out.

Laurie – oh, you’ve got a greenhouse, too! I’m envious.

Hi Gabriolan, Believe that the Beban Park Farmers Market on Wed. aft. Is the largest organic food based market in this general area . Great low prices… Fantastic organic producers from Gabriola ( B&R) and other nearby communities. Slowrise, Bodhi organic bakeries and fresh seafood… Local.. natural and grass fed meats and so much more. Odd time of day .. But worth the trip , in my opinion. The vendors are listed online, or partial list with pix…as I recall.

Laurie, I had to laugh when I read your comment about your grocery purchases! I try to be self-sufficient from the garden too (although this doesn’t always happen in practice, depending on other time committments) and I often feel self-conscious on days when I go through the checkout without a single green thing in the cart.
