Gabriola’s oyster mushrooms
Are oyster mushrooms a spring thing, a fall thing, or what? It doesn’t matter on Gabriola, because we’ve got them through the year here, if you know where to look. In the cold they turn to mush, but if it’s not freezing, we’ve got oyster mushrooms somewhere in the Gabriola woods.

Both! Historically this was the mushroom that hunters (those unable to find a deer) were supposed to learn to identify so that they had something to eat while waiting to be rescued after getting lost….
Actually they will “sprout” whenever the conditions are right.

Mike, have you tried them and what are they like?

@Andrea
They are not the best mushroom in the world but they will fall in the top 5 anyway. Fried with a little butter, salt and pepper …. MMMmmmm
If you are a meat eater they go with anything! Of course you should bring me a couple of pounds so that I can confirm that they are edible. I rarely charge for this service by the way …
