Cycle route planned for Gabriola
Cycle route planned for Gabriola, says the News Bulletin. I guess they just noticed. They say:
A group of Gabriolans want to make their island roads more friendly for cyclists and walkers and have a plan to make it happen.
The ad hoc Gabriola Transportation Committee created a report – Shared Roadways – Gabriola Island Bicycle Route Plan – and submitted it to the Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee in hopes the recommendations will be adopted in to the official community plan.
The report was posted on the Islands Trust website in April. It’s still there, in .pdf format: Shared Roadways – Gabriola Island Bicycle Route Plan, 2010 .
Previous blog post (from April, of course) on this topic: Gabriola Island Bicycle Route Plan.

A great report, what I’ve read. There seems to be talk floating around about lowering the speed limit. I don’t feel very supportive of that.
Enforcing the limits we have would be a better first step, IMO.
Parts of Gabriola are a fairly dangerous place for cyclists, no doubt about it.
I always thought it would be a good idea to rate the different islands with a 1-10 difficulty system for newbies. I’ve seen many situations where injuries and misery would have been avoided if people had been more aware of the big picture … and hills.

Yes. I’m not sure how much good it would do to post a different speed limit when so many people ignore all signs and rules, anyway.
I’d be curious to know what a lawyer would think about rating the islands with a scale of difficulty. Would clueless people who crash on the easy island sue because and stuff like that?

Good point. I’m sure if their was a disclaimer…’9 out of 10 riders agree….’ or something to that end. Clearly Gabriola is more difficult than say, Mudge.

Rick – I can just imagine the section on Brickyard Hill:

Lol. But people do come here to ride without a clue about the level of difficulty.
I was at an incident were a young couple brought her handicapped brother over to ride. He didn’t make it as far as Yogi before wiping out, somewhat seriously. That may be one extreme example, but some sort of method of gauging the difficulty would make it safer, for sure.

Yup. Thing is, that information is available for those who seek it. I’ve bicycled around many of the Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands, and it was not difficult to check maps, bicycle touring books, etc before setting out. I always knew what to expect.
There will always be people who don’t make sensible decisions, and don’t do their research. It’s difficult to arrange the world in ways that will prevent this kind of behaviour.
