Gabriola’s sandstone quarries
You probably know that Gabriola had a millstone quarry, and perhaps you’ve climbed the hill near the Descanso ferry terminal to see all those round holes in the rock, now filled with water. Did you know that Gabriola had a a dimension-stone quarry as well, and that several Vancouver buildings used sandstone from Gabriola?
Jenni Gehlbach’s sandstone quarries on Gabriola page has lots of interesting details; head over there to learn more abut this aspect of Gabriola’s history.

I remember checking those out when we first moved here, of course I was much younger and being the daredevil (or just plain stupid!) decided to try and walk in between them. Well I ended up becoming very aquainted with one of them through a complete submersion in its green gooey waters. Needless to say I was not a very happy camper after my dad hauled me out! Thanks for the memories this morning, haha.

Sarah-Paige — oh MY! You poor thing. Well, you’re probably a member of a very exclusive club now: those who have been totally immersed in Gabriola quarry water. Can’t say I want to join that club, but it’s impressive in a perverse sort of way. :-)
