I’ve got lots of reasons for hoping that the CRTC will let Gabriola Co-op Radio have a spot on the FM dial. Some of those reasons are related to what the station could be: interesting, fun, and informative. We have many fascinating people on Gabriola, so it stands to reason that a Gabriola radio station could be awfully cool. Also, I like the idea of small and locally-produced things, especially those run by volunteers.

My other reasons for wanting Radio Gabriola are related to CBC Radio, and how it seems to be getting worse in so many ways. Sure, there are a couple of good shows, but CBC is mostly Radio Boring and Radio Annoying now, as far as I can see. I could go on and on about the decline in programming standards, but instead let me point you to a post on Boing Boing for a whole different kind of rant about the CBC: CBC totally fails to explain why it expects Canadians to get permission to use public media. See if that doesn’t make your blood boil.

I love the idea of having a public broadcaster in Canada, but the CBC is now so bad that I don’t see why they should have this role or the associated funding.

Anyway. I’m sure that a Gabriola radio station could out-perform the CBC in many ways, so I hope the CRTC will approve Gabriola Radio’s next application.
