Swamp lanterns in a Gabriola stream

Spring on Gabriola means swamp lanterns (skunk cabbage) will be blooming in shady streams and wetlands all over the island. Today we wandered into such a stream, more or less by accident, and had to wade though it to get out of the woods again. There were thousands and thousands of these plants, each a shining bit of cheer.

Yes, I noticed them starting up last week. I had never heard the name swamp lanterns before, but I like it! A shame to call something so pretty and so welcome as an early spring bloom skunk cabbage.

Exactly. They are gorgeous plants, and stunning when they appear by the thousands in a stream or swamp. It’s a good thing they don’t have a pleasant fragrance. If they did, somebody would be ripping these plants up and selling them to the florist industry.
