Herring roe on seaweed
This is what herring roe looks like; it’s all over the place on Gabriola beaches at the moment, now that the herring have spawned.
Going down to Whalebone or Bell’s Landing today? Or Sandwell, or any other beach with a bay? Look for seaweed with teensy white or translucent decorations. Kneel down and take a closer look; you’ll see tiny eggs.
Here’s a Youtube video that shows movement within herring eggs. How cool is that?
And here’s a better look at herring eggs, courtesy of the macro lens:

Great photos! Do you harvest and eat it yourself?

Thanks, marja-leena! I didn’t harvest any roe. I left it all there, so I hope all those eggs will hatch!
