Gabriola wetlands
I went looking for a map of Gabriola streams and wetlands. This isn’t quite what I had in mind, but it’s useful nonetheless: Gabriola Island Local Trust Area Freshwater Ecosystem Map (.pdf). It’s from the Islands Trust, of course.

Wetlands are places of wonder and mystery. They represent a natural solution to cleaning and restoring ecosystems. I’m a firm believer that many opportunities exist on Gabriola to utilize constructed (artificial) wetlands to clean waste water. Although septic systems work, the amount of biological activity in soil – especially in the rocky Gulf Islands – is quite low. We need to protect our water resources more effectively and start building constructed wetlands.
You may have seen a short article I wrote about this topic in the Flying Shingle a few months ago. Here’s a link to if for more details on the process. See http://flyingshingle.com/cgi-bin/coranto/viewnews.cgi?id=20091119005402668769
