Gabriola charities
So. Let’s suppose you’re going to give a bit of money to some Gabriola charity. Which one will you select, and why?
To help with the decision, I made a list of Gabriola charities that are registered charities, and can give tax receipts. Then I narrowed that list down by seeing which charities have websites. My reasoning? Any really organized charity has probably made the effort to register for charitable status, and to put something up on the web. (I removed religious groups from the list, figuring that if you’re a member of a church, you’re probably already giving to your church.)
Here’s the list:
- Gabriola Commons Foundation
- Gabriola Health Care Foundation
- Gabriola Historical and Museum Society
- Gabriola Island Lions Foundation
- Gabriola Land and Trails Trust
- Gabriola Rescue of Wildlife Society
- People for a Healthy Community
- Poetry Gabriola Society
Now, assuming that you’re going to give some money to one of these charities — which one? And why?

I would definitely give to The Commons. The Commons has been set-up to play a catalytic role on the island and Gabriolans are beginning to see how it’s very existence is leading to a convergence of several timely and important areas. For example, The Commons will eventually house an elders eco village, a performing arts centre, a community kitchen… as well as continue to provide space for PHC as well as several other organizations. The mortgage must be paid down. So please support The Commons – it’s there for all of us, our children, grandchildren….
