Help Gabriola by decorating with holly
This year, please deck the halls with all the holly. In fact, how about cutting down a whole holly tree to use as a Christmas tree?
Holly is an invasive plant on Gabriola. It’s native to England, not BC, and it’s doing bad things in the Gabriola forest. The Greater Vancouver Invasive Plant site explains the problem with holly:
Ilex aquifolium can form dense thickets that dominate the tall shrub layer in the forest and suppress germination and growth of native tree and shrub species on the forest floor. It is also a notorious water hog, thus preventing native plants from obtaining sufficient water and the nutrients contained within it. [continue]
So how about if we just use up Gabriola’s holly, and prevent it from re-growing? Christmas decorations seem like a great place to start this project. (N.B: if you do use holly, don’t put holly berries in your compost, or anywhere else where they might have a chance to grow.)
