Lightning struck Gabriola?
The Daily News published an article about the heat and firefighters’ concerns.. The article mentions that:
One lightning bolt did strike Gabriola Island but didn’t ignite a fire, said a spokeswoman with the Coastal Fire Centre in Parksville.

Lightning can strike between clouds or cloud to ground. During fire season all ground stikes (as detected by satellite) are checked by regional forestry (fire). Our closest one is near Errington, they track each ground strike and dispatch helicopters if necessary and a small team can rapell with light equipment to extinguish a fire if it has ignited very quickly before it becomes a problem. The coordinates are within a few metres so not that many can get away.
