There’s an article about the Gabriola Commons in the Nanaimo Daily News today: Shared-property plans attracting more attention.
Gabriola Island residents are turning a former goat farm into a community-owned centre, providing artists with a performance venue, hungry people with meals and seniors with hope that they might not have to move away from their family and friends when they get older.
Islanders had eyed the property for decades, even before the development of Gabriola’s commercial core just down the road. But it wasn’t until the death of a philanthropist and the creation of a non-profit society that the land finally became the community’s.
Since then, members of the Gabriola Commons Foundation have been working to develop the area for residents. It’s already been the venue for festivals and other events, while providing land for community gardens. But many residents believe the Commons holds even more potential: A performing arts space, community kitchen and
elders eco-villageare a few of the projects foundation members plan to develop at the site. And it would all be owned by the community. [continue]
