Gabriola-style fly trap
Last summer there were too many flies buzzing around our back deck, so we decided that Measures Were Needed to get rid of them. Fly strips can trap birds and bats, so we looked for a different approach. Here it is: one home-made fly trap.
To make one of these traps you take a two-litre bottle, and cut off the top bit. Put your fly bait and some water into the bottom half of the bottle. Then invert the top section of the bottle, and slide that into the bottom part, as shown. Flies can get in, but not out. Do make sure to leave some space between the bait and the neck of the bottle; there’s not enough space in the trap pictured.
For bait we used a bit of rotting meat and water. Some people use other disgusting things that attract flies.
Anyway, there you go. One Murderous Monday project!
