Is jellyfish?
Here’s what we found in a tide pool at Whalebone yesterday: a transparent jellyfish thing with pink innards. I’d love to know what it is.
Update: Today’s Gabriola jellyfish – 10 Aug 2010

It’s a jellyfish but I don’t know the west coast ones well enough to recognize them from a photo.
Since you spend a lot of time in the woods, I wanted to ask you, how bad are the biting bugs on Gabriola in the summer? I was there in May and there were none, but by the time I got home (east coast) the blackflies were in full force and the mosquitoes and no-see-ums were starting up. Does this happy bug-free status continue on the island?

People who’ve lived elsewhere tell me that we’ve got it easy here as far as bugs go. I try to remember that as I count the 27 mosquito bites I got in one afternoon.
Mosquitoes leave my beloved alone, for the most part. But me? They think I’m a gourmet meal, so I get lots of bites.
So, bug-free? Not so much, but the bugs here probably aren’t as bad as the bugs you’re dealing with.

You probably have so many bites because you are always in the woods, and thats mosquito heaven…

Annah, if 12 people are sitting around on the deck, I’m the one who will get the most mosquito bites, so I think it’s more than being in the woods – alas! When I’m in the woods I try to make sure that I’m all covered up except for my face and hands.

I looked at over 300 pictures of jellyfish on the net and the closest that game to your jellyfish was the moon jellyfish. Though yours looks like a star in the center and the moon has four pink loops. I’m thinking it may because it’s laying flat on the sand. Sorry I couldn’t come any closer to finding yours. My eyes started to see double after looking at so many pictures.

Thanks, Cheryl! That’s awfully sweet of you to do all that hunting around. I’ll go look at some moon jellyfish photos and see if any look like the jellyfish I saw.
