BC Ferries needs an armed peace officer on vessels travelling major routes to protect the ships from attack, said a terrorism expert.

John Thompson, an analyst with the Toronto-based Mackenzie Institute, said that $5.6 million announced by the federal government earlier this month to beef up security at BC Ferries will do little to prevent an organized attack by terrorists or other assailants.

The federal money will likely be used to install perimeter fencing at the ferry terminals, more television monitors and increased employee training in security measures, BC Ferries said. [continue]

Keep following this line of reasoning, and we’ll soon need fences and armed guards everywhere, because, you know, the terrorist threat exists everywhere people gather.

Travelling on BC Ferries is already unpleasant enough. If the experts have their way, it’s going to get a lot worse. I suppose one day they’ll move on to the minor routes, and somebody will want to put armed guards on the Quinsam, too.
