Coming soon to a beach near you?
I like to swim in the sea, and there are lots of good places to do that around Gabriola. I’ll admit, though, that I’m already creeped out by some of the things that are underneath the water. I can deal with salmon and little fishies brushing up against my toes, but the mere thought of meeting a Lion’s Mane Jellyfish gives me the heebie-jeebies. (And yes, we have plenty of those here.)
Perhaps you can imagine, then, why this Telegraph story, ‘Immortal’ jellyfish swarming across the world has caught my attention:
The Turritopsis Nutricula is able to revert back to a juvenile form once it mates after becoming sexually mature.
Marine biologists say the jellyfish numbers are rocketing because they need not die.
Dr Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute said: "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion." [continue]
Does that mean we’ll have a new kind of jellyfish hanging around Gabriola soon? At least these guys are small. I hope they don’t sting.
